In January 2017 AJ Oster went live with the implementation of Greycon’s trim optimisation tool, X-Trim. The go-live included all six AJ Oster sites with full Greycon on-site support services available at each site.
Greycon first conducted a pilot in 2014 to simulate AJ Oster’s current trim process alignment to Greycon’s X-Trim tool implemented with Oracle business solutions. During the pilot Greycon found the current typical slitting planning process limited to one or two orders grouped and slit against one master coil. In addition, as a fast turn slitting operation there were intentional limits on run length in order to meet dynamic shipping requirements.
AJ Oster decided to appoint Greycon after recognizing numerous benefits from Greycon’s X-Trim optimisation tool. X-Trim allows the AJ Oster users to manage the restock process, providing the ability to produce the right widths and lengths anticipating business demand for finished goods inventory.
Jay Jordan, Sales Manager North America at Greycon commented: “We have really enjoyed working on this project for AJ Oster. Greycon’s X-Trim tool will bring multiple benefits to AJ Oster. X-trim will provide AJ Oster the visibility of all available inventory when optimizing daily sales demand in the quick turn job shop.”
“When Greycon piloted in 2014 it showed great potential. We were excited to see the benefits of using this tool in everyday production at AJ Oster. Since the implementation, Greycon’s tool has proven invaluable. It has helped increased our production throughput, reduced waste, overrun, and manage restocking,” says Eric Ramocki at AJ Oster.
About AJ Oster
The AJ Oster story began in 1922, when Aaron J. Oster opened a one-man scrap metal operation in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Today, the firm he founded has grown into one of the nation’s largest distributors of metal foil, sheet and strip, providing vitally important products and services to customers across the continental U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. As an affiliate of Olin Brass, AJ Oster is a key member of one of the world’s largest and most respected organizations in the metals industry, poised to play a major role for years to come.
Working towards its goal of zero emissions and zero waste, Yuen Foong Yu Paper (YFY) appointed Greycon to roll out its trim optimisation solution, X-Trim, to the YFY Xinwu mill in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Implementation and acceptance completed in January and the project went live last month (March 2018).
Yuen Foong Yu Paper produces reading and writing, industrial and home use paper and ranks among the 50 largest paper manufacturers in the world. It is characterised by a fully integrated production chain covering upstream (forestry, pulp), midstream (paper manufacturing) and downstream (printing, packaging, and design) operations, which yield beneficial synergy effects.
Mr. Li Benyuan, IT manager at Yuen Foong Yu Paper said: “We have worked with Greycon since February 2014 when we integrated X-Trim into our mill in Yangzhou, China. The success of its trimming optimisation solution has led YFY to expand its usage to the mill in Taiwan. We are developing a blue print for a green business and the inclusion of X-Trim assists with both reducing waste as well as increasing production efficiencies.
“We are driven towards achieving zero emissions and zero waste. To date we have developed methods of producing pulp that converts agricultural wastes, such as rice and wheat straws, into raw materials for paper production through enzyme-catalysed decomposition. This process reduces deforestation, carbon emissions and solves the problems of pollution from traditional chemical pulp production methods. We also participate actively in the carbon footprint verification process. During the production processes, methods of recycling to reduce the amount of waste generated are directly implemented. Existing wastes are also converted into raw materials or used as fuel.”
Tian Jinlong, Business Development Manager at Greycon said: “Over the last four years we have witnessed Yuen Foong Yu Paper continually improving in achieving trim waste reduction, increasing overall production efficiency, and time-saving allowing its planners more time to focus on analytical rather than the routine work of feeding orders into our ERP system. X-Trim has enabled overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) improvement through minimum pattern and knife change numbers. The software integrates easily with Yuen Foong Yu Paper’s Oracle enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and in-house manufacturing execution system (MES), optimising its supply chain management (SCM). We are confident that YFY will experience significant benefits with the Xinwu Mill being trim optimised and look forward to sharing the success with them.”
About YFY

Constantine Goulimis, Greycon’s CEO was recently one of the Exclusive Keynote Speakers at OR59 on 12-14th September 2017.
OR59 is the UK’s biggest conference of Operational Research and analytics professionals, academics and practitioners.
The three-day conference was packed with 32 themed stream sessions and workshops, plus some 300 presentations, aimed at sharing knowledge, sparking new ideas, and making new connections.
Constantine presented KBP: A New Pattern Reduction Heuristic for the Cutting Stock Problem. This is a paper on the results from two variants on a new type of heuristic, which is computationally cheap and nicely complements previous ones. The paper was the result of on-going research to reduce the number of slitting patterns, a matter of great importance in some applications, particularly the plastic film industry, where the slitting process can become a bottleneck.
If you would like to learn more on Constantine’s presentation please take a look at the pdf version below:
Arctic Paper has contracted Greycon to upgrade to their system with Greycon’s latest scheduling and trim optimisation solutions, opt-Studio and X-Trim.
In 2002 Greycon first implemented S-Plan and X-Trim at Arctic Paper’s paper mills based in Kostrzyn, Poland. Since then Artic Paper has been a long-standing client of Greycon’s.
Arctic Paper Kostrzyn S.A. is the largest manufacturer of offset papers in Poland. The mill produces over 280,000 tonnes of high quality papers both in reels and sheets every year. More than 75% of this is exported to countries like Germany, Great Britain, France and the Benelux.
Greycon’s solutions have been fundamental to the continued success of Arctic Paper’s production. The Greycon planning solution tightly integrated with the Mill’s manufacturing execution systems forms a critical component in the daily management of Arctic Paper’s operation.
Esa Orola, Global Consultancy Manager of Greycon says “We are really pleased with the results and project execution at Arctic Paper. The Kostrzyn team are able to improve their performance with our latest solutions. It has been really nice to witness. Arctic Paper wanted this project managed by Greycon and to work closely with the Greycon team to adopt the recommended best practices across the operation.”
The migration to opt-Studio and X-Trim’s latest releases has delivered additional benefits to Arctic Paper. There is improved usability and performance, compared to the existing daily scheduling solution from Greycon, which kept the mill in operation 24/7. Incoming orders are automatically scheduled into runs and trimmed with market leading algorithms to minimise waste at the winder and cutter machines.
“One of the benefits we are really pleased with in the new Greycon solution is the enhanced functionality. There is quite a lot in there. One exceptional aspect worth mentioning is that the other departments did not even notice that the old system disappeared and a new one came instead. This means of course that the integration was functioning very smoothly from day one. The implementation team were excellent and completed thorough tests to make this happen.” says Mr. Piotr Stolowski, Planning and Supply Chain Manager, from Arctic Paper.

Greycon is pleased to announce the release of Greycon Suite 9.0. This release marks the third iteration of X-Trim front-technology in 30 years (first Fortran in 1985, then VB6 in 1995, now .NET’s C#) and now completes the migration of all Greycon products to .NET.
In addition to the front-end migration X-Trim now is also 15% faster on difficult-to-solve problems, thanks to advances in the underlying Gurobi mathematical programming libraries. Further improvements to the pattern reduction algorithms show an increase of the reductions from 23.6% (version 8.9 as compared to 8.3) to 24.0% (version 9.0).
The opt-Studio product also contains significant changes in 9.0, including the valuable aspect most requested by clients: comparing the schedule against a baseline scenario, typically set a week earlier. This will show, at a glance, any changes to customer service.
Greycon’s CEO Constantine Goulimis says: “The X-Trim front-end migration was a long and important project.
