SAICA selected Greycon to implement opt-Studio, Greycon’s advanced scheduling planning system.

All systems went live for the first pilot Mill in France as planned in July, 2017. With this initial go-live, SAICA has improved visibility over French production planning, done completely remotely from Spain offices.

SAICA and Greycon have been partners for more than 12 years. Initially SAICA used Greycon’s opt-Studio trimming capabilities to reduce material waste and machine throughput.

In 2015, SAICA engaged Greycon to implement a complete Supply Chain Management solution, to sustain their increasing Make to Stock market. At the same time, they needed tools to appropriately forecast and plan their dynamic Make to Order market.

Abder Guezour, VP of Global Sales at Greycon states: “Greycon and SAICA have been close business partners for many years. The success of this project makes an even tighter relationship with SAICA for the long term, visioning similar implementations in other key business areas. SAICA’s Supply Chain Management and team had a clear understanding of the business objectives, which is being key for the results that they are obtaining by using the full extent of the new systems”

Greycon’s opt-Studio planning and trimming solution seamlessly integrates with SAICA’s in-house ERP and a Supply Network Planning system Using the sourcing needs provided by Supply Network and Demand Forecasting systems opt-Studio automatically produces an optimized production plan, considering machine restrictions, setup costs and order due dates, dramatically improving service levels, addressing inventory replenishment due dates and reducing machine downtime.

Fernando Pelegrin, Information Systems Manager at SAICA: “Completing our planning solution with Greycon’s software ensures system’s future sustainability and maintenance cost reduction, with a long-standing partner. This new state of the art tools will enable us to quickly evolve with our customer’s needs.”

Constantine Goulimis, Greycon’s CEO was recently one of the Exclusive Keynote Speakers at OR59 on 12-14th September 2017.

OR59 is the UK’s biggest conference of Operational Research and analytics professionals, academics and practitioners.

The three-day conference was packed with 32 themed stream sessions and workshops, plus some 300 presentations, aimed at sharing knowledge, sparking new ideas, and making new connections.

Constantine presented KBP: A New Pattern Reduction Heuristic for the Cutting Stock Problem. This is a paper on the results from two variants on a new type of heuristic, which is computationally cheap and nicely complements previous ones. The paper was the result of on-going research to reduce the number of slitting patterns, a matter of great importance in some applications, particularly the plastic film industry, where the slitting process can become a bottleneck.

If you would like to learn more on Constantine’s presentation please take a look at the pdf version below:

Greycon was recently appointed by Polímeros y Derivados (PyDSA) to implement their premier advanced scheduling planning system, opt-Studio.

The overall production capacity at PyDSA has increased in recent years as the business keeps growing. This means they required an improved planning and monitoring process to optimise the efficiency of the operations and gain better visibility across all the production lines.

Leví Cortizas, Project Manager at Greycon says: “We are very pleased with the work we completed at PyDSA and the relationship we were able to forge with the client. Greycon’s opt-Studio will bring multiple benefits to PyDSA some of which are: increased visibility on materials constraints and requirements, reduced trim waste and faster and more accurate response to sudden changes in the demand. The first phase of the project has been successfully completed, on-time and on-budget, with very positive feedback from Polímeros planning team”.

PyDSA is currently implementing Microsoft Dynamics as the new ERP. The implementation of opt-Studio designed for the nonwovens industry and integrated with the ERP will support the production efficiency and visibility objectives.

“With Greycon, we have found an excellent partner to optimise our programming ability and to serve our customers with a focus on continuous improvement in our service capability. We are in the process of implementing opt-Studio and are experiencing a real alliance with Greycon.”  Commented Arturo Aramburu, Operations Director at Polímeros y Derivados.

Arctic Paper has contracted Greycon to upgrade to their system with Greycon’s latest scheduling and trim optimisation solutions, opt-Studio and X-Trim.

In 2002 Greycon first implemented S-Plan and X-Trim at Arctic Paper’s paper mills based in Kostrzyn, Poland. Since then Artic Paper has been a long-standing client of Greycon’s.

Arctic Paper Kostrzyn S.A. is the largest manufacturer of offset papers in Poland. The mill produces over 280,000 tonnes of high quality papers both in reels and sheets every year. More than 75% of this is exported to countries like Germany, Great Britain, France and the Benelux.

Greycon’s solutions have been fundamental to the continued success of Arctic Paper’s production. The Greycon planning solution tightly integrated with the Mill’s manufacturing execution systems forms a critical component in the daily management of Arctic Paper’s operation.

Esa Orola, Global Consultancy Manager of Greycon says “We are really pleased with the results and project execution at Arctic Paper. The Kostrzyn team are able to improve their performance with our latest solutions. It has been really nice to witness. Arctic Paper wanted this project managed by Greycon and to work closely with the Greycon team to adopt the recommended best practices across the operation.”

The migration to opt-Studio and X-Trim’s latest releases has delivered additional benefits to Arctic Paper. There is improved usability and performance, compared to the existing daily scheduling solution from Greycon, which kept the mill in operation 24/7. Incoming orders are automatically scheduled into runs and trimmed with market leading algorithms to minimise waste at the winder and cutter machines.

“One of the benefits we are really pleased with in the new Greycon solution is the enhanced functionality. There is quite a lot in there. One exceptional aspect worth mentioning is that the other departments did not even notice that the old system disappeared and a new one came instead. This means of course that the integration was functioning very smoothly from day one. The implementation team were excellent and completed thorough tests to make this happen.”  says Mr. Piotr Stolowski, Planning and Supply Chain Manager, from Arctic Paper.

The partnership between Greycon and SRF Polyester Film Division started in 2012 when the division selected Greycon’s X-Trim for the slitting optimisation of its BOPET plant in Indore (India). The selection process involved many providers evaluated through a detailed trial using real-life data by SRF team.

X-Trim stood out for the optimisation results showing:

  • Better improvements in trim waste savings (of the order of 0.5%) and in number of setups (of the order of 10%).
  • The capability to handle multi-stage optimisation including primary film lines, primary slitters, metallizers, secondary slitters.
  • Superior & intuitive user interface making it easier for the users to adopt the system.
  • Open integration capability allowing SRF IT team to implement the interfaces with the Oracle EBS (used by the group as the ERP system) with minimal support.

Following this initial successful implementation, SRF rolled out the solution to their new sites in:

  • Thailand (BOPET site located in Rayong) in 2016.
  • South Africa (BOPP site located in Durban) in 2017.

Both sites are greenfield and are fully operational with X-Trim integrated with Oracle EBS.

Anil Gupta, SRF VP-IT in charge of the group information systems, commented that: “I am very pleased with our choice of X-Trim and Greycon as partner. Greycon team has shown consistent commitment at all stages including making some adaptation to the solution reports for our shopfloor instructions needs. The planning teams at each site mentioned they are very excited and comfortable using X-Trim after the first week of training. It is an extremely fast tool which simulates different scenarios”.

Abder Guezour, Global Business Development Manager at Greycon says: “I have done some implementation work myself directly working with SRF team together with our partner in India, Sharad Mittal. I enjoyed working with the team backed by the results we have obtained with X-Trim, the approach of SRF to adopt new business processes to yield further benefits. I am also pleased to see SRF team and our team of consultants & support interacting regularly ensuring knowledge sharing and keeping up-to-date with recent versions of the system”.

Greycon was appointed by Tatrafan to implement a trim optimisation solution after a careful evaluation of the current slit optimisation system at Tatrafan’s plant in Svit, Slovakia. Tatrafan is a BOPP (Bi-Oriented Polypropylene) packaging film producer part of the Terichem Group and produce 17,000 tonnes of packaging film per annum.
After a successful pilot where some of the benefits from Greycon’s solution included; reduction of trim waste and optimisation of knife changes. Tatrafan could see the benefits to implementing Greycon’s trim optimisation solution, X-Trim. X-Trim was integrated with Tatrafan’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, SAP.

Jari Kaukiainen, Sales Manager for EMEA states; “Tatrafan represents a great example where the benefits became obvious through a small pilot project before the implementation. This is one of those supercool aspects with the X-Trim solution, as it is possible to run X-Trim as a stand-alone solution for a period and afterwards integrate it seamlessly with SAP, showing Tatrafan a significant improvement almost from day one.”

“We were very happy to continue on from the successful pilot project and move Greycon’s state of the art optimising tool into daily production at Tatrafan. It is the combination of the various efficiency improvements such as waste minimisation, optimisation of knife changes, minimisation of number of patterns as well as managing different winder types combined with the easy-to-use trim solution which make a difference in Tatrafan’s daily production processes” comments Martin Lach, Managing Director at Tatrafan.

Pyroll Converting recently appointed Greycon to implement their central planning solution, opt-Studio, across 4 of Pyroll converting locations in Europe. The implementation started at the beginning of February 2017 with a pilot mill in the Netherlands and is due to go live by the end of May 2017. Greycon will install opt-Studio at a further 3 mills by the end of 2017.

Pyroll Group is one of the leading paper, cardboard, paperboard, and plastic converters in the Nordic countries, with operations spanning fourteen locations. Pyroll converting provides sheeting and rewinding services handling over 300,000 tons of paper and paperboard annually. Pyroll is the leader in its field in Europe and a pioneer even globally.

Jarmo Sara, Production Director, at Pyroll Converting commented “We are looking forward to complete the implementation of Greycon’s solution and the improvements it will allow for our production. Pyroll looks forward to the already justified improvements in overall production efficiency and thus an increase in production capacity. The multisite schedule optimisation capability allows Pyroll to utilise centralised production planning to support global customer service. Integrating Greycon’s planning solution with our current ERP system will bring our planners and management the extra time needed for moving from reactive-based decision making to proactive-based instead.”

Before the implementation Greycon and Pyroll executed a comparison in order to find out how the schedules created by opt-Studio would compare with the current system at Pyroll. Substantial savings were identified in this head to head comparison convincing Pyroll management to progress to solution implementation and further roll-outs.

Jari Kaukiainen, Business Development manager, EMEA, at Greycon says: “The implementation of opt-Studio will bring multiple benefits to Pyroll. The optimised schedules will improve the production throughput and will allow Pyroll to accept extra sheeting capacity for the customers. Since the system will manage the scheduling of the orders automatically, the effort of the planners will go towards analysing and optimisation instead of the routine work to feed orders and sequence them into the ERP-system.”
